Eggcellent Egg-Shaped Bunny

Easter…CHOCOLATE! What else is there to think about really?! I was looking at making a fondant bunny tutorial when I came across the plastic eggs that I use for my kids egg hunt. The ones you can fill with things other than chocolate, when I realised that I could probably fill the plastic egg with lollies, jewellery, mini marshmallows, popcorn or mini m&m’s (like in my St Pats’ Hats) and cover it in fondant to create a cute Easter Bunny gift. This is how I did it. I must warn you though, I think his face needs some work…he’s not as cute as I had planned lol!

Starting with an egg hunt plastic egg, fill it with your choice of 'goodie'.

To have both hands to work with (makes it so much easier) I stuck a skewer into some foam and propped the egg on the skewer through one of the manufactures holes at the bottom.

I used tylose glue for this. Roll out your choice of coloured or white fondant and cover the egg like you would a ganached cake. Don't smooth or pull too hard or it will tear from the top.

Not entirely sure this is necessary, but I acutally cut the fondant at the opening of the egg using my pizza cutter. I figured if a child was opening this they may need a little help.

Now, I got a little carried away with creating the bunny and… photos of the process didn’t get taken. Basically roll and cut flat 2D areas of fondant and start with a sphere of fondant before shaping the 3D items like nose, paws and mouth. You can always create your own character too.

I added a couloured panel for his belly, eye socket area and mouth/muzzle. I then used a veining too to create his mouth before adding in the teeth.

I had planned for it to be holding or munching this little carrot, but the paws were so far apart...

Ok, so his eyes are a bit big, but his face isn't as bad as I thought...

I hope you and your families have a wonderful, restful Easter break. Happy chocolate-eating 🙂
